Concerned teachers and students of Delhi University have started a campaign to take the opposition to the hurried implementation of the 4-year graduation programme to the public domain under the banner of Save Delhi University Campaign.
Today a group of thirty students and teachers launched the campaign. They collected at Vishwavidyalaya Metro Station between 4 pm – 6 pm as part of the campaign. Placards were displayed, a leaflet on the issue in Hindi and English was widely distributed and signatures on a Petition addressed to the Prime Minister were collected. The students and teachers interacted with the passers-by to explain the issues. In a matter of two hours, 750 signatures were collected on the petition. The signature campaign will be now taken systematically amongst University students and teachers, school students, parents and concerned citizens.
As part of the Campaign a dedicated website has been launched (http://4yrdu.com/) which will host critiques of the 4-year prepared by various sections of teachers, news reports and talk shows on the 4-year course and will announce various action programmes of the Save Delhi University campaign. The website will provide a link to the online petition addressed to the Prime Minister.
The Save DU Campaign will reach Central Secretariat on Friday, 5 April 2013 from 4 pm – 6pm.
The decision to hurriedly and undemocratically push through the 4 year undergraduate course in Delhi University from July 2013 is not only going to adversely affect the careers of lakhs of students, but would pave the way for further fee hikes, privatization and commodification and dilute the comprehensive character of education. Such major changes in the nationally accepted 10+2+3 system should not be allowed without wider debate and discussion. What is at stake isn’t merely higher education, but also the future of this Country. Given the urgency of the situation, we, the undersigned urge you to immediately intervene in the matter and ensure that it is stopped.
